Napa Valley Workshop

Tim Horn painting a demo on a super-foggy morning in Napa.  Check out the muddy back-alley scene he picked, then check out the beautiful painting he made.

I love how Tim makes deliscious lemonade out of lemons.

So, that's an example of how "the Master" does plein air.  Tim's demo's take about an hour and it's almost like watching a magic show.  It's so helpful to watch and bombard him with questions while he's painting.  I mean, just look at that brown barn and the red pickup truck (which he painted in about 3 brush strokes).

Here are some of my first attempts at the Napa landscape.  These photos are not very good - they look too blue - but, you get the idea.

The second day we painted at Dollarhide Ranch.  Tim did a demo of the scene below, so I decided to try to recreate his painting, using all the techniques that he taught us during the demo.  He left his painting out so that I could consult his colors.  I am really happy with my drawing - that water tank got a little confusing.  Overall, it was a great lesson in light and shadow. This is all the work I'm going to post; the other paintings are "wipe outs" for sure.  But, that's okay because I was trying new things that were way out of my comfort zone.   This workshop was great - I learned a lot and look forward to applying some of my new techniques.
